Course Objective
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
Review a database
schema
- Build select and action queries (make-table and update) using
multiple tables , calculated fields and fairly complex expressions
- Change
join-line and query properties
- Build data entry forms for multiple tables,
with list boxes, combo boxes and other controls
- Understand the events
behind the objects on a form e.g. BeforeUpdate, OnClick etc.
- Understand
how to access data from other Windows applications
- Use macros to provide
data validation for forms and to initiate actions on the press
of a command button
- Use macro names and conditions
- Assign actions and properties to macros
- Create a pull-down menu
- Automate start-up procedures and build a front-end form
Delegate Profile
This course has been designed for existing Access database designers
who wish to enhance their existing skills.
Pre-Requisites
Attendees should have attended our Access
- Introduction to Database Design course or have the equivalent knowledge.
Structure
Each delegate has the exclusive use of a PC and training includes
extensive hands-on activity.
Course Content
Revision of the basics
A short revision on creating a
working database schema
Queries
Create select queries using multiple tables,
calculated fields and fairly complex expressions (including cross-tab
and parameter queries)
Create make-table, update and delete queries
to globally change data
Use inner and outer joins by changing the join-line properties in queries
for maximum flexibility when extracting data
Produce top-value queries by changing the query properties
Forms
Create a blank form, and build up the capability
to enter data for 2 related tables from scratch
Change the properties of forms and reports, as well as properties of
the controls for flexibility of output
Create list boxes, combo boxes (drop down boxes), and look-up wizards
for ease-of-use
Add a calendar control for date information
Add command buttons to initiate other actions
Macros
Explore events attached to objects (e.g. BeforeUpdate,
OnChange, OnClick, OnMouseUp etc.) and when to make use of them
Create a macro, and assign actions
Assign properties, macro names and conditions
Run a macro from different starting points
Build a pull-down menu
Application start-up procedures
Build a front-end
form and automate the start-up of the application on opening the database
Create a short-cut for the application from the desktop Back
